Testosterone Q & A

What is testosterone?

Testosterone is a male sex hormone primarily produced in the testicles. This hormone is responsible for many of the characteristics associated with men, including a deeper voice, increased muscle mass, and sex drive.

Testosterone production in men peaks during puberty and young adulthood; around age 30, testosterone production starts to decline.

Though a normal part of the aging process, a decrease in testosterone levels may affect your physical and emotional well-being and cause symptoms that affect your quality of life.

What are the symptoms of low testosterone?

Signs and symptoms of low testosterone vary. Common symptoms you may experience when your testosterone levels are lower than normal include:

  • Low sex drive
  • Fatigue
  • Loss of muscle mass
  • Weight gain
  • Low energy
  • Mood changes
  • Difficulty concentrating

If you’re experiencing these symptoms, schedule an appointment with Dr. Gonzales at Epitome Medical Aesthetics LLC so he can help you feel more like your usual self.

How is low testosterone diagnosed?

Dr. Gonzales takes a patient-centered approach to care. He conducts a comprehensive history and physical when you come in with concerns about low testosterone.

Dr. Gonzales reviews your symptoms and medical history and performs a physical. He then runs blood work to check your blood testosterone levels. The results of your blood test determine if you have low testosterone.

How is low testosterone treated?

To restore hormone balance, Dr. Gonzales offers testosterone replacement therapy to treat low testosterone. He may provide your testosterone as a gel, patch, or injection.

Dr. Gonzales also offers BioTE® hormone pellets to optimize testosterone levels in men. BioTE pellets contain bioidentical hormones, which are plant-based hormones modified to have the same structure and function as the hormones your body makes.

Dr. Gonzales places the pellet under your skin above your buttocks. The pellet then slowly and consistently releases testosterone to optimize levels and alleviate your symptoms.

In addition to hormone replacement therapy, Dr. Gonzales may also recommend lifestyle changes to improve overall health and well-being, such as eating a healthy diet and getting regular exercise.
